I had the pleasure of meeting with Carole, accounts director of Borne Norwich. Borne is an art direction business based in Norwich and London that brand, re-brand, direct and orchestrate the identity and advertisement of clients such as Norwich University of the Arts' magazine Flint, University of East Anglia and Norfolk County Council.
I approached Borne myself through email, inspired by the Platform event at my own university that involved business based lectures by local professionals. I wanted a professional creative direction perspective other than the tutors and visiting lecturers from NUA, so took it upon myself to ask specific questions to Carole about the creative director role, what you need to succeed, how to present yourself as a professional looking for experience and possibly a job and how to start the ball rolling with a low budget within Norwich.
I found her information to be extremely useful and Borne to be a warm and welcoming place to visit let alone work. What I took from the experience was the vital skill of attending to the details within the industry, never underestimating the useful connections around you and the importance of using technology and social media in making or breaking your practice and business. Creating a balance between a consistently professional and dedicated practice and individual, creative processes and practice.
This visit has encouraged my drive to become a director of sorts. I am now more confident in the process of directing and starting from the bottom at as illustration graduate within know specific degree associated with editorial or publication design and direction.
wish me luck!
